ACTIVITIES

 

Publishing

 

The Trust publishes general reading material for all segments of society and for all age-groups, including books for children, post-literacy reading material for neo-literates, and Braille books for the visually challenged. Moderately priced books including fiction, non-fiction, supplementary reading material, informative books on a variety of subjects are published in English, Hindi and all major Indian languages.

 

During the Golden Jubilee year of the Trust, a special project, Golden Jubilee Anthology series was initiated for the first time in the country. In this unique series, special language anthologies of post-independence writings—poetry, short story and drama are being published. So far, 23 anthologies have been brought out in various Indian languages.

 

Promotion of Books and Reading

 

The Trust organizes book fairs and exhibitions throughout the country at rural, regional, state and national levels.

 

NBT Book Club

 

The Trust also has a scheme of NBT Book Club where members can avail special discount on books as well as considerable rebate on postal charges.

 

National Book Week

 

The National Book Week is being observed from 14 to 20 November by educational and other literary institutions as well as publishing organizations through book related programmes and book exhibitions. Owing to the extensive direct mailing of promotional material and the support from the media, the concept has now a popular appeal.

 

Book Publishing Courses

 

To bring in specialized and professional talents to the publishing industry the Trust organizes Book Publishing Courses at various places.

 

Golden Jubilee Celebrations

 

Scheme of Book Promotional Activities

 

Under the Scheme of Book Promotional Activities grant-in-aid is given to voluntary organizations and associations of publishers and authors for organizing programmes like seminars, training courses, workshops and annual conventions related to activities promoting books and reading.

 

Promotion of Indian Books Abroad

 

To promote Indian literature abroad, the Trust participates in international book fairs with a representative display of select books brought out by various publishers. So far it has participated in 350 such fairs including the major ones at Frankfurt, Bologna, Zimbabwe, Beijing, Colombo, Tokyo, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Manila, Karachi, Lahore, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Sharjah and Leipzig. At the Frankfurt Book Fair, 2006 India was the Guest of Honour Country where NBT as the nodal agency coordinated and organized various literary programmes including seminars, discussions and reading session.

 

Assistance to Authors and Publishers

 

To promote the publication of reasonably priced books for higher education sector, the Trust has a scheme of financial assistance for authors and publishers of textbooks and reference material. This scheme of Subsidised Publication of Books is meant for books for which a definite need is felt and which relate to subject areas where books of acceptable nature are either not available or are so expensive as to be beyond the means of the students.

 

Promotion of Children’s Literature

 

Through the National Centre for Children’s Literature, the Trust monitors, coordinates, plans and aids the publication of children’s literature in various Indian languages. The centre has a library-cum-documentation centre with books on children’s literature from India and abroad. The Centre organizes book related programmes and is proactively engaged in setting up Readers’ Clubs at school level to promote the reading habit.
