29. Exhibitions of Hindi Books.-Two exhibitions of scientific books in Hindi and a few regional languages were organised at Gauhati and Bangalore during the year 1964.

30. Translation of Manuals, Rules and Forms into Hindi.-In pursuance of the Presidential Order dated 27th April, 1960, the Central Hindi Directorate undertook translation of forms, manuals, rules and other procedural literature of non-statutory nature in Hindi. 69 manuals comprising 1,903 pages and 1,695 forms were translated during the year under report. 25 manuals and 648 forms translated by the various Ministries and Departments were vetted.

31. Hindi Examinations.-Akhil Bharatiya Hindi Sanstha Sangh, a federation of Voluntary Hindi Organisations whose examinations have been recognised by the Government of India has been set up at the instance of this Ministry to bring about uniformity in the names, syllabii etc. of the various examinations conducted by the different organisations.

32. Award of Prizes to Hindi Writers and Poets Belonging to Non- Hindi Speaking Areas.-In order to encourage Hindi writers and poets of non-Hindi speaking areas a scheme to award prizes has been introduced this year. 27 books have so far been received for consideration under this scheme.

33. Fixation of Symbols in Devanagari Script for Sounds Peculiar to other Regional Languages.-A Committee of Linguists was set up in 1960 to consider and finalise suitable symbols and signs to be added to the present Devanagari script in order to express the special sounds peculiar to regional languages. The Committee has finalised its report which is being examined.

C. DEVELOPMENT OF SANSKRIT

34. Assistance to Voluntary Sanskrit Organisations.-Under the scheme of financial assistance to voluntary Sanskrit organisations/institutions for the promotion of Sanskrit, grants amounting to Rs. 2,06,100/- have been sanctioned so far.

35. Financial Assistance to Gurukulas.-Under the scheme of grant of financial assistance to Gurukulas, grants amounting to Rs. 1,32,250/- have been sanctioned so far to various Gurukulas for award of scholarships to the students studying therein.

36. Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati.-The Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha started its Research and Publication Wing in August 1963 in addition to the Pedagogy and Training Wing. The second Convocation of the Vidyapeetha was held in October, 1964.

37. Central Sanskrit Board.-The various programmes relating to the promotion and development of Sanskrit education are being continued on the advice of the Central Sanskrit Board. The Board held two meetings during the year. The Grants Committee of the Central Sanskrit Board also held one meeting in November, 1964.

38. Production of Sanskrit Literature.-On the recommendation of the Central Sanskrit Board an appreciable number or copies of books relating to Sanskrit literature has been purchased during the year for free distribution to various educational institutions. Reprints of complete works of Shankaracharya have already come out. Reprints of Mahabashya are

about to come out. The second reprint of Apte's Students Sanskrit- English and English-Sanskrit dictionaries was brought out by sanctioning subsidy to the same publishers so that the set of these two books continues to be available at Rs. 10/- to the students as against the original price of Rs. 32/-.

39. Preparation of Sanskrit Dictionaries based on Historical Principles.A further grant of Rs. 1,50,000/- was paid to the Deccan College PostGraduate and Research institute, Poona, during the year to cover the expenditure on the project of Compiling a Sanskrit-English Dictionary based on Historical Principles.

40. Award of Research Scholarships to the products of Traditional Sanskrit Pathashalas.-Details of this scheme are given under the chapter on `Scholarships.'

41. Financial Assistance to Eminent Sanskrit Pandits Who are in Indigent Circumstances.-Financial assistance under the scheme has been sanctioned to about 100 scholars. Besides, 36 more scholars have been selected for financial assistance subject to the verification of their age and income.

42. Award of Scholarships to the Students of High/Higher Secondary Schools Studying Sanskrit.-Details of this scheme are given under the Chapter on `Scholarships'.

43. Meeting with the Representatives of Various State Governments.A meeting with the representatives of the State Governments was held in September 1964 with a view to discussing various problems facing Sanskrit education. Useful decisions on some of the fundamental issues, viz., improvement of pay-scales of Sanskrit teachers, modernisation of Sanskrit Pathashalas and teaching of Sanskrit in secondary schools were taken at the meeting. State governments have been approached for their implementation.

44. Publication of Critical Edition of Rare Manuscripts and Compilation and Publication of Catalogues of Ancient Manuscripts.- Grants amounting to about Rs. 46,900/- have been paid so far under these schemes. Further grants of Rs. 56,000/- are likely to be paid during the current year.

45. All India Sanskrit Elocution Contest.-Sanskrit students participated in the Third Contest which was held at Varanasi in January, 1965. In addition to eight gold and eight silver medals, cash prizes of Rs. 150/and Rs. 75/- were awarded to the first and second winners of the contest. Besides, a cash prize of Rs. 50/- was awarded to each of the third winners of the contest. This year the running Silver Shield went to the team from Uttar Pradesh, whose overall performance was adjudged the best.

D. DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN INDIA LANGUAGES

46. The scheme envisages development of all the Modern Indian Languages mentioned in the Constitution excluding Hindi and including Sindhi. It was included in the second Five-Year Plan, with a plan provision of Rs. 20 lakh. Out of this, nearly Rs. 14 lakh was utilised during the second Five-Year Plan. The scope of the scheme has been expanded and has been included in the third Plan with a programme limit of Rs. 99 lakh.

46.1. This year grants amounting to Rs. 2,55,840/- have so far been paid under the scheme for bringing out encyclopaedias, bilingual dictionaries,

bibliographies and books of general knowledge etc. Notable among the items of publications assisted are works of Swami Vivekananda, Telugu Encyclopaedia, Ramcharitmanas in Bengali and Urdu translation of Shri Nehru's works by the Jamia Millia Islamia.

47. Establishment of Chairs of Indian Studies (Excluding Hindi) Abroad.The Indian Council for Cultural Relations continued to maintain and support the Chairs of Indian Studies established in the University of Melbourne, Australia, University of Iran, Teheran and University of Zagreb, Yugoslavia.
