30. A 25-day training course in paper-setting was organised at Simla for selected persons from Delhi, Bihar, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.
31. A two-month training course in educational measurement and evaluation was organised for creating leadership in evaluation at the State level. Training was imparted to 37 participants in the theory and techniques of educational measurement and evaluation. This was the second training course of its type.
32. The Department of Educational Administration sponsored a workshop jointly with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi from August 1-5, 1966, to develop evaluative criteria for the inspection and supervision of elementary schools. This was attended by inspectors of schools of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

35. The Department also organised at Mysore a four-week career masters training course for teachers of demonstration schools of Regional Colleges of Education and a second course on research methodology at Udaipur for the staff of the State Institutes of Education.

the benefit of secondary schools in India. A large number of developmental programmes aimed at improving secondary education has been conducted. More than 500 schools are involved in this intensive school improvement programme.
38. In collaboration with the University Grants Commission, 44 Summer Institutes in Science subjects were conducted at various centres. The services of 85 American experts (who worked as coordinators) were obtained. Of the 44 institutes, four were organised at the Regional Colleges of Education Grants amounting to Rs. 15,01,992 were paid to the universities for organizing these summer Institutes. USAID supplied books and equipment worth Rs. 19,920 imported from the United States and commodities worth Rs. 7.00 lakh bought in India. In addition, books of the value of Rs. 55,138 were supplied by the UGC. Over 1,700 school teachers participated in these summer institutes.
39. An assessment of extension service departments has revealed that there is a real need to improve the equipments of teachers particularly in regard to subject content. The University Grants Commission and NCERT, in collaboration with the Teachers College, Columbia University Team, have, therefore, decided that Summer Institutes in the Humanities should be held in 1967.
40. The purpose of these summer institutes is to improve the subject-matter competence of participating teachers; to develop effective procedures for using the content in classroom-teaching; to develop a new outlook based on recent developments in subject areas; to establish channels of communication between schools and universities; to stimulate interest in teachers by bringing them into contact with eminent men in the field of their study; and to enable teachers to exchange with their colleagues views in the profession and achieve greater understanding and appreciation of one another's teaching programmes.
41. The fields in which it is proposed to hold summer institutes are languages (regional languages, Hindi and English) and social sciences including history, geography, civics, economics and social studies. In 1967, it is proposed to organise about ten summer institutes in the humanities.

42. Seminar on Experimentation and Action Research is a continuing programme of the Department of Field Services During the period under review, one seminar was organised from February 6 to 10, 1967, in which 37 persons-22 selected by the Department of Field Services and 15 selected by the Department of Basic Education took part. The seminar aimed at preparing resource personnel who could be helpful to the extension centres in promoting experimental projects in schools.
43. School Improvement Programme through Intensive Work is also a continuing programme of the Department under which groups of schools are selected by extension service departments ;all over the country to pay concentrated attention to the programme of school improvement developed by the school staff. To that end, the Department of Field Services has organised a large number of seminars of headmasters in almost all the States.
44. A low-priced kit has been developed by the Central Science Workshop to teach chemistry at the middle school stage. This kit has to be duplicated in limited numbers and distributed to experimental schools and study groups for their use.

The textbooks brought out todate include: (i) Biology textbook in seven sections for Classes IX-XI, (ii) Kavya Sankalan and Gadya Sankalan for Classes IX-XI, (iii) New Algebra textbook for secondary schools, (iv) Ancient India-a textbook of history for middle schools, (v) Hindi Primer and Hindi Reader for Class I, accompanied by teachers' manual and a student's workbook and Hindi Reader for Class II.
48. The Hindi and Biology textbooks have already been prescribed by the Central Board of Scondary Education in the schools affiliated to it. The Hindi Primer and Reader for Class I have been prescribed by the Directorate of Education, Delhi, in the schools affiliated to it.
49. The published textbooks have been sent to the State Government for adoption/adaptation. The Bihar Government has decided to adapt the Hindi Primer for Class I of schools in the State.
50. The textbooks expected to be published in 1967, include: (i) Elements of Electrical Engineering, (ii) Practical Geography, (iii) English Textbook for Class III, (iv) Textbooks on Social Studies for primary classes, and (v) Hindi Textbook for Class VI.
52. Legends of India: A collection of legends for children with a commentary for teachers has been compiled and is at present under evaluation.
In addition, a new series entitled, Our Heritage, divided into three parts, (a) Founders of Our Living Faiths, (b) Saint-Poets of India, and (c) Modern Reformers has been undertaken

53. A Constitution of India for Young -Readers: The script of the publication has been sent to the press for publication.
A book, for age-group , 14-17 years, on the Freedom Movement in India has been commissioned.
The Yearbook of Education on Educational Research is in press and will be published this year.
A half-yearly research journal entitled Indian Educational Review has been started and two issues have been published.
