Adequate emphasis is laid on physical education and sports for which there is a separate physical education branch. A number of sports facilities have been provided in Delhi. Almost every school has a play ground of its own. Several large sports complexes have been developed and a number of mini-stadia have been provided for the schools.

A State Institute of Education is functioning in the union territory which has taken up many projects for curriculum development, preparation of resource material, promotion of audio-visual aids etc. in the teaching of vari- ous subjects. In order to encourage talented child artists of Delhi, Sahitya Kala Parishad alongwith the Delhi United Artists Association jointly orga- nised a cultural evening of classical music and dance during the year.

8. Goa, Daman and Diu

In the Union Territory to Goa, Daman and Diu, most of the schools at the primary level are run by Government; and most of the high schools at secon- dary level are run by private managements with financial assistance from Government. During the year, enrolment has registered an increase both at school and at college level.

Universalisation of pre-primary education is the major goal of the Gover- nment. Under this scheme, it is envisaged to impart pre-school education to children between the age of 3-6 years.

Under the scheme of Ashramshalas, two Ashramshalas have been complet- ed. These schools will not 'only offer better educational facilities but also encourage tribal children to attend the schools. Under this scheme, free lodg- ing and boarding for tribal students are provided.

Under the National Adult Education Programme, more Centres have been opened in rural areas. Education is free in the Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu up to 10th standard to all the students. Education is also free in Classes XI and XII of higher secondary to those students whose parent's annual income is up to Rs. 4,800.

The State Institute of Education works for the improvement of quality of education. The introduction of work-experience at the Middle school and High school level is also coordinated and supervised by the State Institute of Education.

Under the Scheme of Mid-day Meals, meals are provided to school going children of age group 6-11. This helps in checking drop-outs.

9. Mizoram

In Mizoram, the primary education is from classes 1-4, middle education from classes 5-7 and high school education from classes 8-10. During the rec- ent years, several middle and high schools were taken over as Government schools and quite a number of schools were also brought under the deficit systems of grant. The intake capacity of the teachers' training institutes at Aizawal and Lunglei has also increased considerably. For full implementa- tion of universalisation of elementary education, much has been done though still more has yet to be accomplished. The usual criteria for opening of schools, like the catchment area, distance etc., cannot be rigidly followed in Mizoram due to peculiarity of the topography in Mizoram.

The number of trained persons in physical education has increased subs- tantially. Under the science promotion, science motivation courses as also special training for teaching of science and mathematics were organised. The Tribal Research institute, Mizoram is catering to the requirements of reprint- ing of rare and old books, new books and is also training persons in traditi- onal dances and music etc. Library services are also given due weightage and a number of voluntary organisations as also small rural libraries are function- ing in Mizoram.

Scholarships like pre-matric scholarship, post-matric scholarship and tal- ent search scholarships, sainik school stipends and hostel stipends are awarded to students and the number of beneficiaries has also increased subs- tantially over the years.

Various literacy seminars and camps were organised during the period. The number of adult education centres and social education centres has also increased. Citizens Aid Service has already been set up to held people in vari- ous ways. Necessary grant-in-aid is given to various voluntary organisations; functioning in the field of adult (social) education.
