SCHOLARSHIPS
The Department of Education under the Ministry of Human Resource
Development administers a number of scholarships programmes including
those offered by other countries to enable the Indian students to receive
further education. The Department also provides scholarships to nationals
of other countries on a bilateral basis or otherwise. The important schemes,
being implemented are mentioned below.
National Under this scheme, which is, implemented through the State Govern-
Scholarships ments/Union Territory Administrations, scholarships are awarded on merit-
Scheme cum-means basis. During 1985-86, as many as 27,000 fresh scholarships
were awarded. The rates of scholarships, which were increased with effect
from July 1, 1981 vary from Rs. 60/- p.m. to Rs. 120/- p.m. for day
scholars and Rs. 100/- p.m. to Rs., 170/- for hostellers depending on the
course of study.
National Loan Under this scheme, 20,000 scholarships were awarded in 1984-85. The

The amount of loan varies from Rs. 720/- to Rs. 1720/- per year depending
upon the course of study.
Goverment of India The objective of the scheme is to provide educational facilities to, talented

Residential year 500 scholarships are awarded on merit-cum-means basis to students
Secondary Schools of the age group of 11 to 12 years whose parental/guardian income does
not exceed Rs. 500/- p.m. Fifty per cent of the scholarships are awarded on
all India merit basis and the remaining 50% are allotted to States and
Union Territories on the basis of their population, subject to fulfilment
of a prescribed minimum standard. The candidates are, selected on the,
basis of two examinations, the preliminary examination conducted by
the State/ Union Territory Governments and the final examination conducted
by the Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi. 15% and 7 1/2% of
the scholarships are reserved for SC and ST candidates respectively. The
scholarships are tenable for the entire period of secondary schooling,inclu-
ding the plus 2 stage of education in approved residential schools. Scholars
are entitled to full amount of tuition fees, residential charges, cost of
books and stationery, in addition to pocket money, uniform clothing
allowance, and excursion charges at the rates/ceiling decided by the
Government. A travel grant is also admissible to the scholars and their
escorts according to the rates prescribed.
Scholarships to The object of the scheme, which was started in 1955-56, is to encourage
Students from study of Hindi in non-Hindi States/Union Territories and to make available
Non-Hindi to the Governments of these States/Union Territories suitable person-

1985-86 vary from, Rs. 50/- to Rs. 125/- per month,depending upon the course
of study and the States/Union Territories in which study of Hindi is
pursued.

Traditional Institutions engaged in 1984-85, 20 candidates were selected for this award.

National Scholarships at Secondary As in 1984-85, 33,000 fresh scholarships have been allocated in the

The scheme is implemented. through State Governments and Union
Territory Administrations.
General Under this scheme, 180 scholarships are awarded every year to nationals

awarded to students of Indian origin domiciled in other countries.
The value of a scholarship is Rs. 600/- p.m. for under-graduate courses
and Rs. 750/- p.m. for post-graduate courses. In addition, students
are paid Rs. 500/- pm. as summer vacation allowance. The expendi-
ture incurred by the scholars on medical treatment and, study tours is also
reimbursed. While expenditure on fees and other compulsory charges are
borne by the Ministry, hostel and mess charges are borne by the scholars
out of the allowance paid to them.
Scholarships/ Under this scheme, 100 scholarships are awarded every year to the
Fellowships for nationals of Bangladesh. Selection is made by the Government of Bangla-
Nationals of desh in consultation with the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. The rates

amount of scholarship for under-graduate courses is Rs. 600/-p.m. and
Rs. 750/- p.m. for post-graduate courses. In addition, 10 scholarships have
been awarded during the year 1984-85 to Bangladesh students for pursing
studies in Sanskrit and Pali languages.
