Against the final provision of Rs. 145 lakhs under the First Five Year Plan for Loans for construction of student hostels in Engineering and Technological institutions, an expenditure of Rs. 122.71 lakhs was incurred up to 31st March, 1956. For the Second Five-Year Plan a provision of Rs. 400 lakhs has been made for loans under the following schemes:

(a) Loans for construction of students' Hostel-Rs. 300 lakhs,
(b) Loans for construction of staff quarters-Rs. 100 lakhs.
Against the provision made for the year 1956-57 an expenditure of Rs. 42.94 lakhs was incurred up to 31st March 1957. An amount of Rs. 120.46 lakhs has been included in the budget estimates for the year 1957-58 for the following schemes:-
1. Loans to State Government Institutes for construction of hostels-Rs. 36.84 lakhs.
2. Loans to non-Government institutes, for construction of hostels-Rs. 73.62 lakhs.
3. Loans to Government and non-Government institutes for staff quarters-Rs. 10.00 lakhs.
Total: Rs. 120.46 lakhs.

At the last University examination held in April, the Central, Institute of Education sent up 92 students for the B. Ed. examination and 18 students for the M. Ed. examination. Out of 92 candidates, 90 passed the B. Ed. examination of the Delhi University,. eight obtaining distinction. Of the 18 M. Ed. candidates, 17 passed,. one obtaining distinction.
The present session started on 18th July, 1956, with 102 students in the B. Ed. class and 25 students in the M. Ed. class. This year, we have 11 foreign scholars from Philippines, Trinidad, Iran East Africa, Nyasaland, Kenya and Nepal. The number of Ph. D. scholars in the present session stands at 12. One has submitted his thesis to the University for evaluation and two others are expected to finish their work during the session.
The Psychology Laboratory has already completed work in individual tests for the age group 3-11 and the report has gone to the press for publication. Research on a group test of intelligence (verbal) is still in progress. Norms are ready for another group test (non-verbal) for the age group 10-12. A few more items of research work in the field of testing are also on hand. One research fellow is continuing a study on the socialisation on the nursery school children. Another research fellow who was conducting a study on the development of social studies curriculum in our basic school, has computed the work and the report is going to be

At the instance of the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, the Institute had undertaken a study in the vocabulary of adults in the Delhi region. This work has also been completed and the report has been published. On the basis of this study, nine books intended for the neoliterates in this region have been prepared and submitted to the Ministry in manuscript.
The Extension Services Department is continuing its activities. During the summer vacation, a camp was held at Pahalgam for Principals of Delhi Schools. The report of the camp has been published. Besides, the Department has published the following during the year:
1. Behaviour problems of children in school and at home.
2. Report of Summer Camp of Delhi Principals.
3. Report on General Science.
4. Report on Teaching of English.
5. Report on Student Government.
6. Report on Evaluation (including examinations).
7. Questionnaire on School Libraries.

In view of the expansion of activities at the Institute, the Ministry had sanctioned Rs. One lakh for the extension of the Institute building. The estimates, as prepared by the Central Public Works Department are Rs. 1,78,000. The Ministry has been addressed on the subject.
The Government of India have also sanctioned Rs. 22,507 for the construction of a workshop at the Institute. It is to be undertaken by the University. The construction work has, however, not yet been undertaken.
The building of the Basic School is also likely to come up during the course of the next year when the necessary sanction is expected from the Ministry.
