The Board recommended the in- The Ministry of Commerce and

metric weights and measures were
being adopted all over the country
and would become compulsory in
less than a year's time, the changes
were not being reflected in the edu-
cational system. It was suggested
that the States might draw up suit-
able syllabi for various stages of
primary and secondary school
education, and a target date set
for the adoption of these syllabi.
By this date, all textbooks in ari-
thmetic should be revised to bring
them into conformity with the revi-
sed syllabi. The beginning of the
academic year 1962-63 was sugges-
ted as the target date.
School syllabi have been revised
in many of the States. Chapters on
the metric system have been added
in textbooks, but by and large
illustrations and exercises continue
to be in the Indian and British
system. It is necessary to revise
textbooks and if necessary re-
write them. The Central Textbook
Research Bureau has now under-
taken the preparation of a manual
of instructions for textbook writers.
The manual will be in English, but
will be translated into regional
languages.
The most important task now is
the revision of the textbooks in the
manner that will be indicated in
the manual.
The recommendation has also
been brought to the notice of the
University Grants Commission.
