State-wise break-up of the grants sanctioned and the amount utilized by various States has been tabulated in the form of a statement on page 227.
State Schemes for Production of Literature during 1956-57
The schemes in respect of 'Production of Literature' included in the State Educational Development Programmes for 1956-57 were approved by the Government of India and 50 per cent Central subsidy, representing Government of India's share towards the implementation of schemes was released in two instalments to State Governments during 1956-57. The State-wise breakup of the Central grants sanctioned and the actual expenditure incurred thereon is given in the statement on page 228. The progress reports regarding the targets actually achieved are still awaited from the State Governments.
Reconstruction of Secondary Education
This scheme which, besides the main scheme for the conversion of existing High schools into Multipurpose schools by the introduction of diversified courses, includes other schemes like improvement of teaching facilities, libraries, training of teachers etc., was continued during the first year of the Second Plan. The Statement XIII gives the amounts sanctioned to the various States for this Scheme and utilised by them during 1956-57.
According to the information collected from the various States, in all about 575 Multipurpose schools were functioning on 31st March, 1957. Statewise distribution of these schools is given in the Statement XIV.
During 1957-58 uptil now the amounts sanctioned to the State Governments are given in the Statement XV. These represent the first instalment of the Central assistance for the various schemes under the above head included by the State Governments in their Educational Development Plan for the year 1957-58.
The pattern of Central assistance for 1957-58 is:
(1) schemes for conversion of High schools into Multipurpose schools and Higher Secondary schools and training of teachers for these schools-60 per cent; (2) other schemes-50 per cent.
