APPENDIX F (b) PROVISION OF TEXTBOOKS IN THE DIVERSIFIED COURSE

While this State Government is contemplating to institute small committees which will prepare textbooks in courses like, Fine Arts, Home Science, Commerce and Agriculture it is suggested that the Government of India also get standard textbooks in these subjects written by experts either in English or in Hindi. The draft syllabuses in the diversified courses have beer adopted by all the States with minor changes and adjustments, so that if a central authority produces standard texts on the basis of these syllabuses, they (the books) will be extremely useful to the State committees and the teachers in the Multipurpose schools. For example, a committee of outstanding experts should bring out a standard work on 'Appreciation of Art' which is a compulsory subject for all pupils who take electives under Fine Arts. Similarly, standard works can be produced and made available to our teachers in such subjects as Book-keeping and Accounts, Elements of Commerce, Tillage and Soil Management, Crop and Animal Husbandry and Fine Arts and Home Science.

There is a great dearth of books on methods of teaching the various diversified courses. A central committee of experts should prepare and circulate to the Heads of Multipurpose schools these lists so that the teachers' library may be brought up-to-date. In fact, the Ministry of Education should either bring out a special journal devoted to the teaching of diversified courses in Higher Secondary schools or devote a special section of their journal for the purpose. Short term courses are being organised for the training of teachers of diversified courses. They are in the nature of a preliminary course and it is necessary to follow up this course with instructions in the proper organisation and sound teaching in these different courses. The journal is one such means to keep up this follow-up work.
