APPENDIX A (l) : REPORT ON THE WORK DONE WITH REGARD TO REHABILITATION OF DISPLACED STUDENTS AND TEACHERS FROM PAKISTAN
The scheme of financial assistance to displaced students conti- nued during the year 1956-56. The amount spent by the State Governments by way of grants of stipends to College/Technical students and Cash grants and freeships to Primary/High class students and the number of students benefitted may be seen in the Annexure `A', `B' and `C'.
The following State Governments have not so far supplied the required information :-
Madhya Pradesh, Andhra, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Bharat, Rajasthan, Bhopal, Delhi, Vindhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
During the year 1955-56, Nine Secondary Schools and 55 Government sponsored Free Primary Schools were opened by the State Government of West Bengal and a sum of Rs. 43,31,000/- was incurred by the State Government for their maintenance. Ten disrupted educational institutions have been revived during the year. The State Government of Punjab have spent a sum of Rs. 83,350/- on the maintenance of Government Schools and Rs. 33,000/- and Rs. 38,344/- on the maintenance of schools in camps and schools in women Homes/Infirmaries respectively. A sum of Rs. 32,860/- was given by the State Government of Punjab to the Privately Managed institutions for the maintenance of their schools. The State Government of Punjab also spent an amount of Rs. 80,075/- on the students in the Training Institutions and the number of students benefitted was 1295. 19 disrupted educational institutions were revived in Punjab during the year under report. The State Government of Assam have spent a sum of Rs. 14,411/- on the maintenance of Government Schools where as the State Government of Tripura have spent of Rs. 5,478-/. Three Government Schools were started by the Government of U. P. during 1955-56. The State Government gave an amount of Rs. 2,20,000/- as grant-in-aid to disrupted and non-disrupted institutions catering to displaced persons.
The State Government of Saurashtra have spent a sum of Rs. 1,80,074/- on the maintenance of Government Schools whereas the State Government of Pepsu spent a sum of Rs. 2,18,000/- on the maintenance of Privately managed schools Three educational institutions were revived in the State of Pepsu during the year 1955-56.

Four new Government Schools have been started by the State Government of Tripura and a sum of Rs. 1,67,008/- has been incurred by the State Government on their maintenance. The State Government of Tripura have also given an amount of Rs. 2,278/- as examination fees to different institutions. The State Government of Kutch have spent a sum of Rs. 34,838/- on the maintenance of Privately Managed Schools. A sum of Rs. 1,66,309/- has been spent by the State Government of Ajmer on the maintenance of Refugee Schools.
A sum of about Rs. 28 lakhs as grant-in-aid were given by Ministry of Rehabilitation to the disrupted and other educational institutions catering education for displaced students from West Pakistan.
The work of assisting displaced and other persons who lost their original certificates during the disturbances continued and during the period (i.e. from January, 1955 to December, 1955). 108 certificates were issued by the Punjab University, Solan, on the basis of verifica- tion of statements made by this Ministry. Six certificates were obtained from Pakistan through the Indian High Commissioner at Karachi and 25 from the Punjab University, Lahore and Director of Health Services, Lahore etc. through our Deputy High Commissioner at Lahore. Reference of 20 statements of qualifications received from the various Ministries were verified from the record available in this Ministry. Five persons were awarded their marks certificates on the basis of records available in this Ministry. Two persons were assisted in securing their Middle Examination Certificates from the Director of Public Instructions, Simla. The statements of qualifications of 78 Europeans who left India after the Independance were verified to help them in finding jobs in England.
The Provident Fund claim of one person has been admitted by the Registrar, Cooperative Societies, Jullundur in the next meeting going to be held in India shortly.
