APPENDIX A (m) : REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF PUBLICATIONS SECTION.
The main function of the Publications Section is to publish educational reports, pamphlets, booklets, brochures, research pamphlets and a quarterly journal entitled "The Education Quarterly". A Casual Sales Depot is attached to the Section to meet the increasing demand by the public for the publications of the Ministry. During the period 1st January to 15th October, 1956, 14,269 copies of various publications were sold at the Depot for a Cash return of Rs. 13,206/5/-. The Section distributes its publications free of charge to State Governments, Indian Missions abroad, Members of Parliament, Central Ministries and Universities etc. In addition to its own publications, it distributes gift books received from CARE to a number of educational institutions.
"The Education Quarterly" is a regular journal published by the Section in March, June, September and December. The Quarterly provides authoritative information on educational and cultural pro- grammes, experiments and activities conducted in India and elsewhere. The stock features in the Quarterly include news on Indian and Foreign education (Education Today), Book Reviews, the Round upof Ministry's Activities, a Forum of current controversies and Index to Articles. In order to speed up the implementation of the Secondary Education Commission's recommendations, a new Section on Secondary Education was added to the Quarterly during 1955-56. The Bulletin is now an independent publication.
The Publication Section has continued in the last year to expand both in the volume of publications and of sales. A provision of Rs. 10,000/- was made for the printing of periodicals, brochures etc. during 1956-57.

The Section is responsible for organising a series of Ministry of Education features for distribution to the Press in India.So far it has distributed four features. It is also "middleman" to the Unesco Clearing House for the distribution of special Unesco Educational features to selected educational journals in India. The Publications Section makes recommendations to Unesco on behalf of the journals concerned and distributes to the journals, the features sent it by Unesco Clearing House. So far 12 features have been distribute* to six journals.
The Section also organises exhibitions of its publications at suitable places. During 1955-56, the Section displayed its publica- tions at Parliament House for the Second Meeting of the All-India Council for Secondary Education and the 23rd Meeting of the, Central Advisory Board of education, at the P & T Centenary Hall for the Ministry's Hindi Exhibition, at the Delhi Public Library for the Unesco Seminar of Librarians and at Delhi University for the Thirteeth Session of the All-India Educational Conference. Publications were also sent for display to the Mysore Dussehra Exhibition; Government Training College, Karnool and Janta High School, Kund (Gurgaon). The Section was responsible for organising the Ministry of Education's pavilion at The Congress Exhibition at Amritsar at the A.I.C.C.S. Session.
