APPENDIX B: QUESTION OF THE INTRODUCTION OF FILM APPRECIATION AS A SUBJECT OF STUDY IN SCHOOLS AS RECOMMENDED BY THE NATIONAL BOARD

(Ministry of Education).

The film today is recognised as a powerful medium of mass communication as well as of classroom teaching. It is, therefore, necessary to regulate its use in a manner which will accord with the values cherished by our society. Legislation and censorship are at best negative devices for this purpose. The more effective remedy lies in inculcating the principles of film appreciation in the minds of children. It was with this point in view that National Board for Audio-Uisual Education in India recommended the introduction of film appreciation in schools at its second meeting held in New Delhi on May 17 and 18, 1955.

The following steps are recommended to develop film appreciation in schools:-

1. Formation of state film libraries which include a collection of significant films.

2. Introduction of Audio-Visual aids to education as an important subject in the teachers' training institutions and making film appreciation an integral part of subject.

3. Organising refresher courses in film appreciation for teachers in service.

4. Organisation of film societies in schools, screening of good films, discussions, study of outline of the cinema and production techniques, where possible. This should be done with the active participation of a teacher who can guide children on points to be kept in view while seeing and appreciating films.

5. Formation of film societies and encouraging the study of cinema as an art form, as co-curricular activity in colleges and universities.
