APPENDIX N : CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION OF CADETS TO THE NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY.

It has been recently represented to the Ministry that the two conditions pertaining to (1) the age of admission and (2) the' medium of examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for selecting candidates for admission to the National Defence Academy need revision. With regard to the point of age, the suggestion is that the present limit of 17 1/2 years should be raised to at cast 18 years. This is likely' to enable a much larger number of matriculate students to take the selection examinations.

With regard to the question of the medium of examination, the point of representation is that English still continues to be the medium both for the examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission and the viva voce by the Selection Boards. As the medium of instruction in most Secondary schools has now been changed over from English to the regional languages, it is not fair to the candidates to require them to take these examinations in English.

The Ministry would like the Board to give their considered advice in the matter so that the question, if necessary, may be taken up with the Ministry of Defence.
