APPENDIX A (C) : REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES AND PUBLICATIONS OF THE CENTRAL BUREAU OF EDUCATION, INCLUDING THOSE RELATED TO EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS

The main work of the Publication Section is:-

(a) to prepare and print pamphlets, brochures and journals;

(b) to print, stock and distribute all the publications of the Ministry ;

(c) to arrange for the exchange of Ministry's publications and to distribute gift books received from foreign countries.

'The Education Quarterly' is the most important periodical of the Ministry of Education. It was started in March, 1949 and is now in its seventh year of publication. The journal has provided useful information and material on the various educational activities and development in India as well as in foreign countries. In recent years, its scope has been widened and, with the object of increasing its direct utility to teachers and other educational

workers, it has carried contributions from educationists in India and abroad on significant problems of education., educational administration and accounts of useful educational experiments.

Other publications brought out in the year 1954 are :-

A Hindi translation of `Student Indiscipline' (by Humayun Kabir) has also been published this year.

In order to acquaint the general public with the plans and progress of Education in India in recent years, the following publications have been brought out:-

1. Seven Years of Freedom.

2. Azadi Ke Sat Varsh-A Hindi version of `Seven Years of Freedom.'

3. The Five-Year Plan-Schemes of Educational Development (in press).

4. The Five-Year Plan-A Brief Review of Progress (in press).

In order to meet the general demand for more copies the second edition of `Report of the Secondary Education Commission' (Reprint) was also published this year.

A number of Provisional Lists of Technical Vocabularies in Hindi were. prepared by the Hindi Section of the Ministry of Education. Five such lists were published by this Section during the year. The subjects of the lists are Agriculture, Transport, Railways, Communications and Posts & Telegraphs.

A pioneer illustrated publication entitled `Child Art' the first of a series of pictorial publications, was also brought out.

In the series entitled `Studies in Education and Psychology' the following books were published in 1954 :-

1. Teachers' Handbook of Social Education (Second Edition).

2. Experiments in Teacher Training, by Menon and Kaul.

3. Better Teacher Education, by K. L. Shrimali.

4. The Content of History in Indian Schools, by K. P. Chaudhury.

5. Understanding Basic Education, by T. S. Avina- shilingam.

Educational Statistics

The collection of educational statistics from States, universities, Centrally Administered Institutions, etc. was continued. Special efforts were made to reduce the time lag in the publication of the, Annual Report's on Education by sending an officer round the States to reconcile discrepancies on the spot.

A large number of statistical enquiries from foreign countries, international organisations, Ministries of the Central Government, educationist, Planning Commission, etc., were attended to.

A set of 12 Educational Wall Charts in attractive colours was brought out. These charts cover important topics such as Progress of Education, Output of Graduates, System of School Classes, Literacy, State Educational Budgets, etc.

Information Service

Mimeographed sheets regarding facilities for study in institutions in India and overseas were brought out on a number of subjects and old information sheets were brought up-to-date. A large number of enquiries on various aspects of education relating to India and abroad received from students desirous of proceeding for higher studies, the general public, educationists, universities and State Students' Advisory Bureaux, Foreign Missions and other organisations were answered. A note containing general information for Indian students going abroad was published in the December 1954 number of "The Education Quarterly" and 1,500 off-prints obtained for free distribution.

Efforts were made to equip the reference library attached to the Section with up-to-date calendars, prospectuses and other informative literature regarding educational institutions in India and overseas. During this period (January-December 1954) over 700 persons visited the Information Section Library.
