APPENDIX A(l)- REPORT ON THW WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY

The usual activities of the Department, namely conservation of monuments, exploration and publication made good progress during the year 1951. As regards conservation special attention was given to the Taj Mahal, the Gol Gumbad, Elephanta Caves, the Bhubaneshwar temple and the Konarak temple. The Department resumed the explorations of the river valleys in Bikaner Division of Rajasthan State. It was found that the chalcolithic culture of Harappa, extended much further east than was expected before. A large number of manuscripts are now ready for publication in the press.

During the year Under review Parliament passed the Ancient and Historical Monuments, and Archaeological Sites and RemainS (Declaration of National Importance) Bill, 1951, the object of which was to declare certain Ancient and Historical monuments and archaeological sites and remains in Part A and Part B States to be of national importance and to bring them within the purview of the Central Archaeological Department.
