APPENDIX A(m)- REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY
The main activity of the Department during the year 1951 was to survey the community life in Southern Bengal for the 'Unesco group Tension Project. In this connection the materials collected on Sociometry, the behaviour patterns of the communities, as judged by the protocols of Projective Tests and Life Histories, were statistically analysed and the results indicated. The report is now under preparation. In addition, the project initiated by the Government of India under Prof. Gardner Murphy's scheme on the Refugees from Eastern Pakistan was completed.
A Sub-station of Anthropology in the Andaman Islands was established. The main object of this Station is to investigate how friendly relations can be established with the tribal population.
Short surveys of the anthropology of the Wynaad tribes and the languages spoken by the Parji and the Gadba tribes of Orissa were undertaken.
A course of lectures in Human Anatomy, Sociology, Genetics and Projective Tests ware given by specialists in the Department of the trainees and Scientific Assistants. The Department also arranged an Exhibition for the benefit of the delegates and members who came to Calcutta in connection with the Indian Science Congress.
Several papers were contributed to different scientific journals by members of the Department.
