APPENDIX A(e)- REPORT ON THE PROGRESS MADE WITH THE MODIFIED OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIPS SCHEME 1949-50
The main features of the Modified Overseas Scholarship Scheme 1949-50 were reported to the Central Advisory Board of Education at their Sixteenth meeting held in January, 1950. Further developments that have taken place since then are detailed below.
The Government of India sanctioned a sum of Rs. 2.82 lakhs for implementation of the Modified Scheme out of which only Rs. 1.4 lakhs are to be spent during the current year and the balance to be spent during successive years. The demands received from the sponsoring authorities were drastically curtailed in order to keep the expenditure within the sanctioned limits.
The nominees of the Ministries and Offices of the Government of India, Research Institutions and Universities under the control of the Central Government, were selected by a special Central Selection Board consisting of Secretary, Ministry of Education, a Member of Union Public Service Commission, and a nominee of the sponsoring Ministry concerned; the Central Selection Board met on 8th June, 1950 and again from 18th July 1950 to 22nd July, 1950 to consider applications. Besides this, the Union Public Service Commission selected scholars for certain scholarships by putting the usual advertisements in the papers.
A list of selected candidates is given in the Annexure.
