APPENDIX A(f)- SCHEDULED CASTES, SCHEDULED TRIBES AND OTHER BACKWARD CLASSES SCHOLARSHIPS SCHEME
The Government of India approved in 1943 a grant of Rs. 3 lakhs a year for a period of 5 years with effect from 1944-45 for scholarships to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, pursuing courses of study in scientific and technological subjects beyond the matriculation stage.
For the year 194849 in addition to the usual grant for Scheduled Castes, a further grant of Rs. 50,000/- as an experimental measure was sanctioned for scholarships to students belonging to the Scheduled Tribes on lines similar to those of the Scheduled Castes Scholarships Scheme.
2. In the year 1949-50, the Government of India approved a revised scheme for scholarships to include students of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other Backward Classes. A sum of Rs. 10 lakhs was sanctioned for the scheme, of which Rs. 6 lakhs were set apart for scholarships to Scheduled Castes student,; and Rs. 4 lakhs for those belonging to the Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, with a provision to transfer funds from one head to the other, if necessary.
A memorandum relating to the procedure of selection and containing detailed information regarding the scholarships awarded during the years 1944-45 to 1949-50 was submitted to the Central Advisory Board of Education at its meeting held in January 1950.
3. For the year 1950-51, the Govt. of India sanctioned a grant of Rs. 12,00,000 for these scholarships. The number of applications received and scholarships awarded during 1950-51 are as under :-

The Government of India have already decided to continue the scheme for the next four years and accordingly it is proposed to make a provision of Rs. 15 lakhs for these scholarships in the budget estimates for the year 195152.
