APPENDIX Q- TEACHING OF GANDHIAN LITERATURE IN SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES
Hon'ble Minister for Education desires that the question of introducing Gandhian literature as a compulsory subject to be taught in all schools and colleges may be brought to the attention of the Central Advisory Board of Education. As to the importance of the matter there can be no two opinion-. Information available with the Ministry shows that there are several books and publications on the subject. It is also observed that many States and Universities have already introduced this literature for different examinations. In some cases the literature has been prescribed as compulsory and in others as optional-or for non- detailed study. It is for consideration whether it is necessary to adopt a uniform practice in regard to this matter in all States and Universities,

2. The need for familiarising students with the life and teachings of the Father of the Nation hardly needs to be stressed. The Board may therefore consider this matter and if -considered necessary, appoint a small committee to examine it in greater detail and submit a report to the Chairman of the Board for such action as may be considered advisable.
3. Besides examining the question of introducing a study of Mahatma Gandhi's life and teachings at different stages in the school and university, the committee may also consider the question of the availability of suitable literature on the subject. It may, also examine the possibilities of encouraging the growth of such literature with the object that suitable text books or reading material should be available for all the different stages in the school and in the University.
