APPENDIX S- ABOLITION OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Many civilised societies have given up the use of corporal punishment in the schools. Modern psychological and educational research has suggested alternative methods of correcting, guiding and controlling children. Instead of being an embodiment of brutal force and coercion, the teacher is expected to be an understanding friend and sympathetic guide and instructor.

2. Most educationists hold that corporal punishment in schools, though practised in the past all over the world, has proved ineffective and even harmful. Its destructive effects have now been generally proved and recognised. As such, it either has been or is being eliminated from the present flay concept of a school and the student-teacher relationship.
3. Notwithstanding the general condemnation of corporal punishment in educational. institutions, reports are being still received that the practice is still prevalent in -various parts of India. It is, therefore, felt that more strict instructions are necessary for the total abolition of corporal punishment.
