APPENDIX A (f)- REPORT ON THE PUBLICATIONS OF THE CENTRAL BUREAU OF EDUCATION INCLUDING THOSE RELATING TO EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS

The publication work of the Bureau has made significant progress during the year 1949-50. It comprises (a) the preparation of periodic and non-periodic publications and (b) the printing, stocking and distribution of publications prepared by the Ministry, as well as by private individuals or societies sponsored by the Government of India.

The periodic publications of the Bureau at present include the following :

1. Journal

A Quarterly Journal entitled "The Education Quarterly" published in March, June, September and December each year.

(i) Directory of Educational, Scientific, Literary and Cultural organisations in India.

(ii) Annual Report on the work and achievements of the Scientific Institutions and Societies in India.

(iii) Annual Report on the work and achievements of the Humanis- tic Institutions and Societies in India.

(iv) Annual and Quinquennial Reports on the progress of Education in India.

3.Statistical publications.

(i) Educational Statistics, India.

(ii) Educational Statistics, Indian States.

(iii) Education in Centrally Administered Institutions.

(iv) Education in Universities in India.

(v) General Educational Tables.

"The Education Quarterly" was started in March, 1949. It contains authoritative information on problems of education and cultural reconstruction, including education activities of the Central, Provincial/State Governments and of the Universities. It also contains information about facilities for education in India and abroad and recent developments and trends in education. Since its 2nd number, an index of articles appearing in the various educational journals published in India has been added. The journal has been well received by educationists and the public in India and abroad. So far three issues of the Journal have been published and the 4th issue is now under preparation.

The Directory gives an account of the particulars of the more im- portant educational, scientific, literary and cultural organisations

in India. The 1946 issue has been published. A revised edition of the Directory with up-to-date information is under preparation.

The Reports on Humanistic and Scientific Institutions give a com- prehensive account of the work and achievements of Scientific and Humanistic Institutions in India. The publications are now in the press and are expected to be released early.

The other statistical publications for the subsequent years are under preparation.

A new feature has been the addition in the educational, statistics, and are expected to be released early.

Annual Report on the progress of Education for the. year 1947-48 is under preparation. Since 1937 no Quinquennial Report has been pub- lished owing to the shortage of paper. Government decided to bring out a Decennial Report for the period 1937-1947. This report is In the press.

Regarding the statistical publications, the following have already been published :

(a) General Educational Tables for British India, 1943-44;

(b) General Educational Tables for India, 1944-45;

(c) Educational Statistics, British India, 1945-46 ;

(d) Educational Statistics, Indian States, 1945-46 Part I.

(e) Educational Statistics, Indian States, 1946-47 Part I.

(f) Educational Statistics, British India, 1946-47 ;

(g) Education in Centrally Administered Institutions. 1946- 47.

The following statistical publications are in the press:

(a) Educational Statistics, India, 1947-48.

(b) Education in Universities in India, 1947-48.

The other statistical publications for the subsequent years are under preparation.

A new feature has been the addition in the educational statistics, publications of charts, graphs, bar-diagrams and other pictorial illustrations concerning various aspects of education.

The non-periodic publications of the Bureau cover the following types of work :

I. Pamphlets giving general information about the facilities available abroad for higher studies.

II. Pamphlets/Brochures giving information about educational in stitutions in India and facilities available in the institutions.

III. General.

Under the first category the following have been published:-

Facilities for Advanced Studies Abroad

(a) Architecture.

(b) Public Health.

(c) Pharmacy.

(d) Social and Welfare Work.

(e) Teachers' Training.

(f) General Information about the U.S.A.

A pamphlet on the facilities for studies in Electrical Engineering is in the press, while pamphlets on Veterinary Science and our Students Abroad are under preparation.

Under the second category of the non-periodic publications, the following are under preparation;

(a) Brochure on Indian Universities and Institutions of Higher Learning in India.

(b) Teachers' Training in India.

(c) Physical Education in India.

As regards the general publications, the following have been published in addition to the Proceedings of the Central Advisory Board of Education, the All-India Council of Technical Education and the reports on the various Committees set up by the Central Advisory Board of Education and this Ministry.

(a) Education in Free India (August 1947-August 1948).

(b) A Review of Education in India during 1948-49, a report submitted at the twelfth International Conference on Public Education, Geneva, July, 1949.

A pamphlet "A Guide to the Educational System in India" is under preparation.

Publication Committee

It has been considered necessary for some time that the Ministry of Education should bring out more publications on important educational topics. In order to guide and advise the preparation of the publications on subjects within the purview of the Ministry, a Committee has been set up in this Ministry, known as 'Publication Committee' consisting of the Joint Educational Adviser, the Heads of Divisions and Bureau Officers. The main functions of this committee are :

(a) to suggest subjects for preparation of pamphlets and booklets

(b) to consider monthly reports regarding publications activity of the Ministry of Education;

(c) to make any suggestions regarding reprints of Bureau publications and priced publications of the Bureau.

The first meeting of the Committee was held on 21st February, 1949. Since then it has been meeting periodically when all important

matters relating to the publication work of the Ministry are discussed.
