APPENDIX F- REPORT ON GOVERNMENT OF INDIA SCHOLARSHIPS TO SCHEDULED CASTE STUDENTS.

The Government of India sanctioned in 1944 a grant of Rs. 3 lakhs per annum for a period of 5 years with effect from 1944-45 for scholarships to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes in British India, pursuing courses of studies primarily in Scientific & Technological subjects. A copy of the printed Report for the year 1944-45 & 1945-46 is enclosed. The Board set up In 1944 for the award of the scholarships has been reconstituted for the remaining period, i.e., for the years 1947-48 and 1948-49. The composition of this Board is as follows:-

1. Sir Maurice Gwyer, K.C.B., K.C.S.I., D.C.L., LL.D. (Chairman).

2. The Educational Adviser to the Govt. of India.

3. A representative of the Government of India in Ministry of Finance.

4. The Hon'ble Mr. Rameshwar Agnibhoj, (Minister, C.P.).

5. Mr. Ramanand Das, Secretary, Depressed Classes League, Calcutta.

During the last three years, i.e. 1944-45, 1945-46 and 1946-47, 888 awards have been made for studies tenable in India including 37 women candidates and 375 scholarships were renewed in order to enable the old scholarship holders to complete their approved course of study.

Scholarships tenable outside India -Out of the 22 awards made for higher studies, abroad ten scholars have since returned to India after completing their course of study.

Award for 1947-48.-Wide publicity was given to the scheme this year through advertisement in 34 leading newspapers of the country Including 16 papers in major Indian languages, the Vice-Cbancellors of Indian Universities and Provincial D.P.Is. were also asked to give adequate publicity to the scheme. In addition, two Press Notes were issued and an announcement made by the All-India Radio.

Over 2,000 applications have been received including those belonning to Pakistan nationals which have been duly forwarded to the Govt. of the Dominion of Pakistan.

350 fresh awards have been made in addition to about 200 scholarships rene we The number of fresh scholars included 19 women students. The selection bag bee made strictly on the basis of merit after giving due consideration to the professional courses and women candidates.
