APPENDIX L EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Encouragement of extra-curricular activities through educational institutions

In November 1941, the Government of Assam suggested that the question of the encouragement of extra-curricular activities through educational institutions on the lines of the Recreation Club Scheme and the circular issued by their Director of Public Instruction should be considered by the Central Advisory Board of Education. They thought that it would be good. if the Universities and the Secondary Boards of Education could take into account the college and school records of students with regard to sports, debates, general knowledge, proficiency in music, power of observation, scouting and Bratachari activities and other methods of general cultural development.

2. The points emphasised in the circular letter from the Director of Public Instruction referred to in paragraph 1 above are:-

i. The education at present imparted is centred exclusively on examinations.

ii. Most children betray a narrow outlook after leaving school

iii. There should be a great deal more of recreation, amusements and entertainments in schools than are found at present.

iv. A strong vocational bias is to be introduced in all the early stages of education.

v. Children should have opportunity of studying the lives of all great teachers and thinkers
