SCOPE OF THE PUBLICATION

This publication presents time series data on budgeted expenditure of Central and State Governments on education and training incurred by the Department of Education as well as other Departments. While Education Department provides the bulk of public expenditure other Departments too fund education e.g. Ashram Schools and schools in tribal areas, schools maintained by defence establishments, medical colleges, agricultural colleges/ universities, etc. Details like plan and non-plan break- up of expenditure on education and classification of the expenditure under revenue and capital head have been indicated state-wise as well as sub-sector wise. Other Departments' expenditure on education is categorised under three heads like formal education, training and informal education. The formal education covers colleges, universities and professional colleges under other Departments/Ministries, while training includes in- service training for police, government officers, defence personnel, apprentices etc, Informal education is that vast area of education which does not fall under these two categories, like Anganwadis and Balwadis, correctional homes and so on. This document also provides a statement on budgeted expenditure on education as a percentage of state Domestic product (SDP) and state revenue budget.
