SOURCES OF DATA
 

The data on public expenditure on education from 1951-52 to 1993-94 has been taken from two sources. For-the period 1968-69 to 1993-94, the annual publications of the Ministry of Human Resource Development entitled "Analysis of Budgeted Expenditure on Education" provided the data.

For the earlier period, 1951-52 to 1967-68, information has been taken from the annual publications of the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) of India titled "Combined Finance and Revenue Account" which furnish the audited expenditure figures. Data on state Net Domestic product at current prices for the period 1960- 61 to 1979-80 have been taken from the various,issues of "Estimates of State Domestic Product" published by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Department of Statistics.

For the years 1980-81 to 1992-93 the estimates were furnished by the CSO. The estimates of Gross National Product (GNP) at factor cost and current prices from 1951-52 to 1990-91 has been taken from the Economic Survey 1992-93 of the Ministry of Finance. For the year 1991-92 the quick estimate of GNP released by the CSO has been utilised.

Data for various princely states and other regions existing before the reorganisation of states has been shown against the states/union territory with which they have been amalgamated after reorganisation.
