ABSTRACT

Availability of trained and educated man-power largely depends upon the prevalent educational system. Skilled man-power is required for efficient planning and management of available resources in the country. It is a known fact, that there is a paucity of skilled man- power in certain regions of the country whereas in other regions, there are surpluses leading to unemployment. These imbalances are required to be corrected for optimum utilisation of human resource.

The present publication encompasses the educational statistics for the academic year 1979-80. However, the coverage is confined to those students who have passed Matriculation/High School Standards on- wards upto research level courses.

"Research level courses" (Table 1.1)

As many as 3,553 students appeared for Ph. D. level courses during the year 1979-80, out of which 2,880 were declared successful. The pass percentage for the Ph.D. level courses works-out to 81.1%. However, looking at the break-up of various disciplines offered for Ph. D. level courses, it may be noticed that Humanities and Social Sciences count for lion's share, both in terms of total number of students and those declared successful. This is followed by Science courses.

Out of 3,553 students who appeared for Ph. D. examination 783 were females out of which 610 cleared the examination successfully. A scrutiny of the figures reveals three distinct trends. Firstly, majority of women students opt for Humanities and Social Sciences as compared to the male students. The percentage of women student appearing & passing Ph. D. level courses works out to 67 % and 70.7 % for Humanities and Social Sciences as against the corresponding percentage of 52.9% and 51.4% for men. Secondly, the performance of women students has been better as compared to male students. Another visible feature has been that as compared to men lesser number of women go for science subject. Details for research courses in various disciplines are available in table I -1 for the country as a whole and in Table I to Table VIII for statewise details.

Post Graduate Courses

As many as 1,90,594 students appeared for Post Graduate level courses out of which 1,46,881 passed the examinations successfully and leading to a pass percentage of 77%. Here also Humanities and Social Sciences dominate the, field and account for more than 60 % of the total number of students, both in terms of students appeared and having passed the examination. The share of Science courses works out to 13.4%. The share of Post Graduates passing Medicine/Surgery works out to only 2.3%. The number of students opting for Agriculture, Engineering, Music, Fine Arts, Law works out to less than 2% in each case. This analysis leads us to accept the common belief that at the level of Post Graduate Courses also, our educational system has been producing mostly Post Graduates in Humanities and Social Sciences. Details of examination results at Post Graduates level for the country as a whole may be seen in Table 1.2, State wise details are available in Tables IX to Table XX.

First Degree Level Courses

The total number of students appearing for First Degree level courses was 12,13,057, out of which 6,81,284 students finally cleared these examination. The pass percentage works out to 56.2. Needless to say that Humanities and Social Sciences dominate the same with a percentage share of 45.5 and 47.2 in the total number of students appearing &passing in First Degree Level Courses. The percentage share of Science students (including Home Science) has been 14.2. Another revealing feature of the educational pattern has been that next to Social Science and Humanities, Commerce has been the most popular course accounting for 19.2 % of the total number of students having cleared the First Degree level courses. Education (B.Ed.) also appears to be quite popular with a percentage share of 8 %. The other disciplines viz., Engineering, Medicine. Business Administration, Law, Music, Fine Arts and Oriental studies account for less than 5 % share of the total number of students passing First degree level courses.

Another revealing feature of the studies is that the pass percentage of First Degree level Courses varies considerably amongst various disciplines. it is the lowest in the case of Law (LL.B). The pass percentage in the area of Agriculture, Engineering, Technology, Business Administration, Education, Medicine, Music and Fine Arts has been quite encouraging. This establishes the general belief that dream of students go for professional courses and are logically serious minded. Possibly it can be inferred that lesser intelligent students or non-serious students go in for social Science and Humanities. Detailed examination results at First Degree level may be seen in Table 1.3 for the country as a whole and Table XXI to XXIII for the States.

Matriculation/High School and Intermediate/Higher Secondary Levels.

The total number of students appearing in Matriculation/High School and Intermediate/Higher Secondary examination was 64,98,622 out of which 27,61,999 finally passed the respective examinations. The pass percentage works out to 42.5. Further breakup of pass percentage of 27,61,999 students who passed the examination is given below:-

             The  pass  percentage  for  the  Matriculation/  Secondary  level
