PREFACE
 

        
                There was a long felt need for making available at one place the entire range of
           data that make up financial resources for education sector.  This document entitled
           'Financial Statistics of Education Sector 1996-97' is the first attempt in this
           direction.  The booklet contains the data relating to following items. 
        
           1. Plan and Non Plan               :  State Budgets (Plan and Non -Plan)
              Budgeted Expenditure               and State Education Budgets (Plan
                                                 and Non-Plan) with sector-wise details.
        
           2. Five Year Plans                 :  Sector-wise outlays & expenditure details
              Outlays & Expenditure              of all the Plans i.e. from First to Seventh.
        
           3. Plan Statistics : Central Sector:  Sector-wise and year-wise outlays and
                                                expenditure for the entire period of
                                                8th Plan.
        
           4. Plan Statistics : State Sector  :  Sector-wise, Year-wise and State-wise
                                                 outlays 8th Plan.
        
           5. Grant to States under CSS       :   Scheme-wise and State-wise details of
                                                grants released to States under Central
                                                and Centrally Sponsored Schemes.
        
           6. Important Financial             :  Indicators indicating  expenditure on
              Indicators                        education as percentages to total budgets,
                                                State Domestic Products(SDPs),  Gross
                                                National Product (GNPs), etc. in time-series.
        
                The contribution made by the Project Staff of P&M Unit is commendable.
