PREFACE
 

This is the Fourth issue of the publication "A Hand Book of Educational and Allied Statisitics, the first one was brought by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1980. The main objective of bringing out this publication is to make available the latest data on Education and related sectors like Population, Literacy, etc. for the benefit of various users of educational data viz. Planners, Administrators and Research workers.

The publication provides time series data on Education for All India covering the period 1950-51 to 1994-95 and State-wise data for the Years 1980-81 and 1990-91. .1s 2

The work relating collection of data in respect. of affiliated institutions was transferred to U.G.C. w.e.f. from 1987-88 and U.G.C. has since not been able to bring out statistics relating to Higher Education, it has not been possible to update relavant information. Therefore the publication has been restricted to school education only.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Education thanks the Registrar General of India. The Ministry also expresses its thanks to all the Ministries and other organisations from whose publication Secondary data have been reported in the publication.

I am grateful to Dr. R S Thakur Joint Director (P) in this Ministry for his dedicated efforts in overall supervision of the data collection, its compilation and for editing the final manuscript, I also share my gratitude to the other staff of the Statistical and CMIS Units of the Ministry for their sincere efforts in brining out this publication.

Based on suggestions made by some of the User organisations, we have slightly revised the Fourth issue so as to make it more useful to all the users of this publication. However, further suggestions to improve the publication are most welcome and may be sent to the Joint Secretary (Planning), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Education, New Delhi.
