INTRODUCTION
Educational Planners, Administrators and various Research Workers in the field of education have been finding it difficult to get different types of educational statistics in a single publication giving overall picture in the field of education. Besides, to evaluate the performance of educational system and to formulate programme, time series data may prove very useful. The present publication covers important statistics in the field of education and related sectors. Various types of data available in this publication are explained below for the benefit of the users of this publication.
Tables 1.1 to 1.12 give data on area, population density, All India population estimates for the total population and for the age- group 6-11 Years, 11-13 Years, 14-15 & 16-17 Years for the period 1981-2000 have been included in these tables. These estimates have been supplied by the Registrar General's Office. Statewise estimated population in the age- groups 6-10, 11-13, 14- 15 & 16-17 for the Years 1985,1990, 1995 & 2000 have been added. Data relating to area, population, density have been taken either from the published data by the Registrar General's Office or have been made available by them for use by the Ministry. Projected population statewise upto the Year 2001 based on 1991 census has also been added. Even Age-group wise population for selected major states based on 1991 census has been given.
Tables 2.1 to 2.7 give data which have been compiled on the basis of published "Census of India 1961, 1971, 1981 & 1991- Social and Cultural Tables". Literacy rates for total population, in respect of 1961, 1971, 1981 and 1991 have been given, sex-wise as well as state wise. Age-wise Literacy rates, however, have been provided on the basis of 1981 census. Literacy rates separately for rural/ urban areas have also been given in these tables.
Tables 3.1 to 3.5 give the number of institutions by type and enrolment by stages. All India time series data for the period 1950-51 to 1994-95 as well as Statewise data for the period 1980-81 and 1990-91 have been given. Even class- wise, State-wise enrolement has been provided for 1980-81 and 1990-91.
Tables 4.1 to 4.9 throw light on the development in the field of Education and measures the impact of Education system in India with the help of useful indices. These indicators are:
1. Index of Enrolment growth
2. Gross Enrolment Ratio
3. Teacher - Pupil Ratio
4. Drop-outs Rates
5. Efficiency of Education in India
6. Students flow in school classes (I to VIII)
7. Attrition Rates of Teachers
Tables 5.1 to 5.7 give expenditure on education for different types of institutions. Breakup of the total expenditure by source has also been given. Direct expenditure on education has been given for All India and Statewise. Budgeted expenditure on education, Statewise and Sectorwise, have been given for the Year 1991-92 to 1993-94. This has been done with a view to present the growth during the seventh plan period. Percentage of budgeted expenditure on education to total budget have been given for all the States/UTs during the period 1989-90 to 1993- 94.
Tables 6.1 to 6.5 give number of teachers by type of' school. i.e. Primary, Middle and High/Higher Secondary Schools, trained teachers and percentage of trained teachers to total number of teachers. Time series data for All India for different types of schools have also been given.
Tables 7.1 to 7.4 giving plan statistics i.e. Outlay and expenditure data on education for I,II,III,IV,V VI and VIII Plans. Sectorwise outlay and expenditure and the percentage of plan expenditure to total expenditure have been given in these tables.
Tables 8.1 to 8.4 give information regarding the availability of school buildings in the country for Primary, Middle, Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools. Distribution of schools according to type of accommodation as classified into Pacca, Semi pacca, Kachha, Thatched huts, tents, open space and the shortage of rooms at various stages are given. Number of schools having play ground facilities has also been given.
In this addition, a new chapter on Results of examinations held for matriculation, Higher, Secondary including intermediate/Old Pattern and selected Professional/vocational/ Technical courses of post matric diploma level have also been added for years 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90, 1990-91 & 1991-92.
