PREFACE
"Education in India" is an annual publication by the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, in four volumes : Vol. I(S) containing the numerical data of school education, Vol. I(C) the numerical data of college education, Vol. II the financial data and Volume III examination results of matriculation and higher levels.
The present publication Vol. I(C) relates to the year 1986-87. It is organised in two parts. Part-I contains an Abstract and the All India Statistical Tables and Part-II comprises of statewise statistical tables based on the information collected from the States and Union Territories through forms ES-I(C).
It is hoped that the publication will be useful for educational planners and policy makers as well as to those engaged in research and development.
I would like to thank the State/Union Territory administrations, the officers and staff of Statistical Unit and of the CMIS Unit for their efforts which contributed to this publication. We stiff have a long way to go to reduce the time gap in bringing out the statistical publications and our constant endeavour would be to reduce the time gap. Further suggestions for improving the publication are welcomed.
