 EXPLANATIONS

1. Academic Year

-For the sake of uniformity, the academic year is taken to coincide With the financial year i.e. from 1st April, 1986 to 31st March, 1987, THE NUMERICAL DATA 1986-87 GIVEN IN THIS PUBLICATION IS AS ON 30TH SEPTEMBER 1986, however for Karnataka State data for 30th September 1985 have been repeated.

2. Recognised Institutions

-All statistics relate to recognised institutions only. The recognised institutions are those in which the course of study followed is that which is prescribed or recognised by the Government (Cen- tral or State) or by a University or by a Board of Secondary and for Intermediate Education Constituted by and which satisfy one or more of these authorities as the case may be in respect of reasonable standard of efficiency. They are open to inspection and their students are ordinarily eligible for admission to public exa- minations and tests held by the Government or the University or the Board or any authorised agency.

3. Government

-Includes both Central and State Governments, unless otherwise provided for.

4. Local Bodies

-Include District School Boards, Municipal School Boards, Cantonment Boards, Town Area Committees, Panchayat Samities, Zila Parishads. etc.

5. Institution for boys

-For the purpose of reporting statistics in this publication an institution for "boys" stands not only for an institution in which only boys are admitted but also includes co-educational institution.

6. Institution for Girls

-An institution for girls is one which is open to girls only. An institution which is meant mainly for girls but which also admits boys up to a certain age has also been treated as an institution for girls.

7. Enrolment by Type of Institution

-Means total number of students studying in an educational institution as a whole irrespective of other different levels of courses being taught in that institution.

8. Enrolment by stage/level courses

-Means Enrolment in different levels/stage of various courses irrespective of the type of institutions in which these courses are being run.
