FOREWORD

Bringing about qualitative improvement in education has always been a major concern of CBSE; in fact, it is one of the important mandates in its Charter. The quality of education has several dimensions beginning with the infrastructure provided in the school system down to the nature of inputs in and outside the classroom and all the support activities organised to maximize the learner's performance, One of the major indicators of the success of these factors is the performance given by the learners in test situations.

Generally, the performance is adjudged in terms of the percentages of the marks acquired and the, positions obtained by the individuals in relation to the target group. 'Though it may reveal overall standing of the individuals yet it does not throw sufficient light on the qualitative change that has been brought about in their thinking patterns as a result of educational inputs provided. The real qualitative change can be judged only in terms of the quality of answers given by the individuals which may include the way the subject-matter has been perceived, the manner in which the problems are analysed, and the style in which the subject-matter and the thought processes are organised- The Board took-up the present study relating to Performance Analysis in Physics on a pilot basis with the object of providing feedback to the teachers and learners on different areas of learning and to further improve the methodology by developing clearer perceptions of the marks of excellence in human learning. It is hoped the present study would lead to better understanding of the issues involved. Observations and suggestions of the practising teachers and the pedagogues in this regard will, indeed, be very much welcome.

I am grateful to the members of the Working Group in Physics and the Resource Persons who have worked hard to help the CBSE in this study, I must also congratulate Shri H.R. Sharma, Director (Academic) for conceiving the entire plan of study and designing the basic approach to it. Shri P.C. Bose, Education Officer (Science) who has been responsible for coordinating the study, deserves special mention.
