MISSION AND OBJECTIVES
 

Thrusts and Priorities

Mission of NOS

To provide relevant, continuing and developmental education to prioritised client groups, in consonance with the normative national policy documents, and in response to the assessed needs of the people, through an Open Learning System, at the school stage, as an alternative to the formal system and thus make its share of contribution to:

* universalisation of education;

* greater equity and justice in society; and

* the evolution of a Learning Society

* To provide opportunities for continuing and developmental education to interested learners, through courses and programmes of general education, life enrichment modules and vocational courses, at the school stage, and using a diversity of teaching-learning strategies, including appropriate communication technologies, within the framework of the normative documents and of the mission of NOS;

* To provide consultancy services and to engage in model building, in close collaboration with States and a variety of other agencies or institutions;

* To serve as an agency for effective dissemination of information related to Distance Education and Open Learning

* To identify and promote standards of learning in Distance Education Systems and Open Schools which may be set up in different parts of the country, through Research and Evaluation and to maintain standards of equivalence with the formal system, while keeping its own distinct character;

* To exercise normative and coordinating functions while promoting standards in Distance and Open Learning Systems in the country, and thus to make its own contribution to the evolution of a Learning Society,

Prioritised Client Groups

The prioritised client groups of NOS, selected from the perspective of those who are educationally and socioeconomic most disadvantaged, are as follows:

* Girls, Women, as a category

* Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes

* Rural People and Urban Poor

* Unemployed/Part Employed, seeking jobs/better jobs

* The older than the younger, from 35 years down, in the age bracket of 15-35
