National Policy on Education accords due importance to the Development of Languages. The Department has undertaken various programmes for the development of the languages schedule of the Constitution alongwith Sanskrit and Urdu is the reponsibility of the Department. Propagation of English as well as some other Foreign languages are also given due attention.
The Central Hindi Directorate is primarily engaged .in promotion of Hindi particularly in Non-Hindi speaking States in the country through voluntary agencies, correspondence courses and other schemes & programmes. Hindi Writers whose mother tongue is not Hindi are also being encouraged. The Directorate is also bringing out a number of magazines and journals. The Directorate is currently engaged in compilation of Hindi based and regional languages dictionaries.
CSTT is engaged in production of University level books and reference literature in various disciplines and identification of Pan- Indian terminology. It has brought out 11,635 university level books in Hindi and Regional languages. The Commision has so far evolved 5.5 lakh Scientific and Technical terms in various disciplines.
Kendriya Hindi Shikshan Mandal, Agra, is recogised as an advanced centre for teaching, training and research in Hindi. It also confers awards on the eminent Hindi scholars for their distinguished contribution in the field of development and propagation of Hindi, Hindi Journalism, research, etc.,
Schemes of (i) Appointment and Training of Hindi Teachers in Non- Hindi Speaking States and (ii) Appointment of MIL Teachers are in progress.
The Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore is engaging in implementing the language policy of the Government of India and coordinates the development of Indian languages. The Institute conducts certificate courses in Bangla, Tamil and Telugu.

The council has been set up as an autonomous organisation to further broadbase the Urdu promotional activities.

The Central Institute of English and Foreign Language (CIEFL), Hyderabad, is engaged in improvement of teaching of English language.
Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan was set up in 1970 as an Autonomous Body, the Sansthan is an apex body for the propagation and development of Sanskrit language in the country. The Sansthan imparts studies upto Doctrate level through Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeethas located in different parts of the country and also takes steps to preserve and publish rare manuscripts testifying to the ancient traditions of learning and intellectual pursuits.
The board is an advisory body to the Government of India on matters of policy pertaining to the propagation, promotion and development of sanskrit in the country.
Five major schemes are being implemented through State Governments/Union Territories for development of Sanskrit. These are (a) Financial assistance to eminent Sanskrit scholars in indigent circumstances, (b) Modernisation of Sanskrit Pathshalas, c) providing facilities for teaching Sanskrit in High and Higher Secondary Schools, (d) Scholarships to students studying Sanskrit in High and Higher Secondary schools and (e) Grants to State Governments for promotion of Sanskrit.
The objective of the scheme of Modernisation of Madrasas is to encourage traditional institutions like Madrasas and Maktabs by giving financial assistance to introduce Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Hindi and English in their curriculum, on voluntary basis.
