FOREWORD
In this booklet an attempt has been made by the author, Shri R. K. Bhandari, to compile all factual information and derive selective indicators for depicting the progress of Women's education in India during the course of the last century and to analyse the gap that still remains to be bridged towards equalisa- tion of educational opportunities between boys and girls in the country. Measures as suggested by various Committees and Commissions appointed by the Government from time to time in the field of education, have been reiterated as a future course of action for solving various problems, which are responsible for the slow progress of Women's education.
The author has assembled facts and figures about the pro- gress of Women's education and analysed the various dimensions of the problem of their educational development in the future.
It is hoped this publication will prove to be useful for educational administrators and planners who are charged with the responsibility of the formulation of the plan programmes for the future development of this section of the society, and that it will serve as a small handbook for the students of Education and research workers in the field.
