The scheme for award of National Scholarships on merit was introduced in 1961-62
for higher studies in Arts/Science/Engineering/Medicine/Agriculture/Law/
Commerce/Education, etc in recognised educational institutions in India. The allocation
is made by Government of India on the basis of data received from State/UT authorities.
The Registrars of Universities/Secretaries of Education Boards furnish data in regard
to the number of students appeared and passed in various examinations in prescribed
proforma by the end of September each year.
Eligibility The awards under the scheme are made on the basis of results of following examinations:
(i) School Leaving examinations i.e. Matriculation/High School/Indian School
Certificate;
(ii) 12th class of 10+2 pattern/PUC/Intermediate;
(iii) 1st Degree examinations i.e. BA/BSc/BCom (Pass/Hons) and 1st degree
professional examinations i.e. BEd and LLB.
Indian nationals who have secured 60% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination
and passed in the same year of award of scholarship are eligible for award. Persons in
full time employment or in receipt of any other scholarship/stipend or studying on
part-time basis/privately are not eligible.
Scholarships for Postgraduate studies are sanctioned without consideration of the income
of the parents of the candidates. In case of undergraduate/diploma courses the scholarship
is offered to those candidates whose parents income is not more than Rs. 25,000 per
annum. Tenability: A scholarship under the scheme is tenable from the year it is
made. The scholarship is tenable for the next course of study and not for any equivalent
course. In the case of engineering/medicine studies, the scholarship is tenable for the
first degree. Award is not given/renewed for Ph.D/Research studies.
Selection Eligible scholars are selected strictly in order of merit i.e. the qualifying examination,
Procedure starting from the top of the merit list of each examination for which the quota of
scholarship has been allocated. The scholarship is renewable from year to year within
the same stage of education and the renewal depends on promotion to the next class
with 50% aggregate marks.

Object The main object of the scheme is to encourage study of Hindi in non-Hindi speaking
States and to make available to the Governments of these States, suitable personnel for
teaching and other posts where knowledge of Hindi is essential.
Scope The scheme of Scholarships to Students from non-Hindi Speaking States for post-
matric Studies in Hindi was introduced in 1984-85 on all India basis. The State
Governments announce the scheme and invite applications by issuing a press notification.
The scholarships under the Scheme are awarded for the following recognised full time
courses of education for study of Hindi as one of the subjects on the basis of result of
examination next below conducted by the Board of Education or University or
recognised Voluntary Hindi Organisation.
(a) Pre-University/Intermediate
(b) Full-time courses in Hindi. examinations conducted by Hindi Voluntary
Oganisations.
(c) Training courses for Hindi Teacher's Training College or Hindi Voluntary
Organisations.
(d) First Degree (Pass/Honours with Hindi)
(e) MA (Hindi)
MPhil/MLitt/PhD (Hindi)
Eligibility The candidates whose mother tongue is not Hindi and who belong to any of the
following States/Union Territories are eligible for scholarship : Andhra Pradesh, Assam,
Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya,
Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, West Bengal, Andaman and
Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Goa,
Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Mizoram and Pondicherry.

The award is given on the basis of results of examinations next below conducted
by the Board of Education/University/Voluntary Hindi Organisation and passed in the
first attempt.
Following categories of candidates are not eligible for the award:
(a) Candidates who belong to non-Hindi Speaking States but have been residing in a
Hindi Speaking State for more than 5 years;
(b) Candidates in employment (full or part time) unless they are sponsored by the State
Government/UT Administration;
(c) Candidates who wish to pursue their studies through correspondence/private;
(d) Candidates who are preparing for two courses simultaneously unless Hindi is one;
of the subjects of study in both these courses. A candidate in receipt of this
scholarship (which is treated as an incentive to learn Hindi) is riot barred from
receiving any other scholarship. Scholars studying for PhD course can be permitted
to accept remuneration for teaching; if it is a part of study/research.
Amount of Rs. 50-125 pm depending on the course of study.
Scholarships
Selection Selection is made by the non-Hindi Speaking State Govts/UT Administration on the
basis of merit determined by the percentage of aggregate marks obtained in the qualifying
exam. Candidates who are in employment and are sponsored by the State Govt are
given preference.
Duration An award once made is tenable for the Course for which it is given subject to good
and Renewal conduct and regularity in attendance. The scholarship is renewed from year to year
of Awards provided the scholar passes in Hindi, secures promotion to the next higher class and
Hindi continues to be part of the course of study in the next higher class. The period
of scholarship for PhD is 2/3 years. If a scholar fails to pass the examination or fails
in Hindi, the award is cancelled.
Application Application forms are supplied by non-Hindi Speaking State Governments. Completed
procedure applications with attested copies of testimonials, etc should be submitted to the notified
authority of non-Hindi speaking State by the prescribed date. Voluntary Hindi
Organisations are required to send applications to the State Govts/UT Admn concerned.

Place of The selected candidates will work under Supervisor approved by the Institution to
Research which the candidate is nominated after selection. The research may be conducted at

NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TALENTED CHILDREN FROM
RURAL AREAS FOR SECONDARY STAGE STUDY

Eligibility The objective of the scheme (in operation since 1971-72) is to provide opportunities to
school students from rural areas to pursue secondary stage education. The number of
scholarships allocated is communicated to the State Govts/UT Administration every
year.
A student studying in a school in community development block in class VI to VIll is
eligible to compete for the scholarship.
Selection Eligible students are required to appear in two stages of examinations : First Stage -
Examination is conducted by the State Govts/UT Administration. The number of
selected students is generally ten times the number of scholarship to be offered.
Second Stage - The final examination is conducted at the National level by NCERT.
The local unit set up in the State Institution of Education in consultation with the
national level unit in the NCERT, prepare the test papers and organise the examination
throughout the States/UTs. The test consists of two papers of 1 1/2 hours each for
testing the innate abilities of students. It is common to the entire State/UTs. The final
selection is made with the Community Development Block as a Unit and top students
in each block are awarded scholarships.
Rate of Rs. 60 to 100 per month. The scholarship is paid to the scholar through institution.
Scholarships Scholarship commences from the month in which the admission is obtained in a School
and is paid upto the month in which last examination of the secondary stage education
is taken, In the case of renewal in the succeeding year, scholarship is paid from the
month following that for which the scholarship was paid during the previous academic
year. The scholarship is renewed subject to good academic progress.

NATIONAL TALENT SEARCH AWARDS

The National Council of Educational Research and Training under its National Talent
Search Scheme awards 750 scholarships. The purpose of the scheme is to identify
brilliant students at the end of class X and give them financial assistance towards
getting good education so that their talent may develop further and they may serve the
discipline as well as the country.
Eligibility All students studying in class X in recognised schools are eligible to appear at the State
Level examination from the State in which the institution is located. As National
Talent Search scholarships are given for studies starting from class Xi, students who
may have appeared in class X annual examination latest by May of a particular year
are eligible for appearing in the National Talent Search examination which is normally
held on the second Sunday of May every year. Those students who are seeking
admission to class XI (in July) of a particular year are eligible for taking the second
level examination in May of the same year.
Selection The procedure consists of two-stage selection through (a) State Level Examination;
and (b) National Level Examination.. Selected candidates are informed after National
level test mid interview.
Examination State Level Examination: Each State/UT is required to recommend a given number of
candidates for the second level test to be conducted by the NCERT. This number is
based on, the enrolment of States/UTs at the secondary stage. The candidates are to be
recommended on the basis of merit in the written examination. The screening
examination is normally conducted by the States/UTs during October/November each
year. The exact date is advertised/published at an appropriate time. State Level
examination may have two parts; Part I Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Part 11 Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT). The State may however modify the content and the procedure
for the first, stage selection test. The State, level merit list candidates are eligible for
National Level Test.
National Level Examination consist of two parts -
Part I Mental Ability Test which carry 100 items and Part II Scholastic Aptitude Test
carrying 25 items in each of the 8 subject of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology,
History, Geography Civics, Economics. Candidates can choose any Four subjects.
The tests) are of objective type having multiple choice type of items. The minimum
qualifying marks are 40 of each paper, The medium of examination is English or
Regional Language. The standard of items conform to the standard of class X public
examinations.

Interview Candidates approximately double the number of awards available on the basis Of merit

Foreign Students of Indian nationality and studying abroad Candidates at the Class X level may
compete for Talent Search Awards under the following conditions :
(i) The Indian students studying abroad are exempted from the first level screening
test.
(ii) A candidate has to appear in the NTS examination in India.
(iii)A candidate should have obtained 60% marks in the qualifying exam (X Std)
(iv) A candidate can apply in the prescribed form supplied by the NCERT. which should
reach the Head, Department of Measurement, Evaluation, Survey Data Process-
ing, NCERT, New Delhi 110016, latest by 31st March each year.
(v) A candidate has to attend an interview in India at his/her own cost.
(vi) Scholarship, if selected is paid for pursuing studies in India only.
Award The awardees studying in Basic/Social Sciences are eligible to receive scholarship
upto PhD level whereas the awardees studying professional courses in medicine/
engineering are eligible to receive scholarship upto second degree.
Rates of Rs. 150-400 per month depending on the course of study. In addition to scholarship,
Scholarship the PhD awardee is paid a contingency grant of Rs. 3,000 per annum.
