GATE
Scholarships to Indian nationals for postgraduate degree programme in Architecture/Engineering/
Technology/Pharmacy are awarded to those who qualify the Graduate Aptitude Test in
Engineering (GATE). The GATE is conducted on All India basis by 5 Indian Institutes
of Technology and Indian Institute of Science on behalf of the National Coordinating
Board, Deptt. of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi.
Eligibility (a) Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Pharmacy/Architecture
and those who are in the final year of such programme;
(b) Those who have obtained by examination, professional qualification of AMIE etc
recognised by UPSC as equivalent to BTech/BE;
(c) Master's degree holder, in Sciences/Applied Sciences and those who are in the final
year of such programme.
Examination Consists of two papers each of 3 hours duration. Paper I Candidates are to select one
of the two groups SEA or SEB. Selection of a group is based on their qualifying
degree. Sections under Group SEA : Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics,
Thermodynamics, Electrical Sciences, Material Science, Earth Sciences, Computational
Methods. Sections under group SEB: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics,
Agricultural Sciences, Plant Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Microbiology &
Biochemistry, Human Physiology, Survey Specification & Building Economics. Paper
II One discipline to be chosen out of option of 17 disciplines. Examination paper are
set in English and the candidates are required to answer them in English only.
GATE Result of GATE examination is declared in the form of overall percentile scores.
Result
Value of Rs 2,000 per month. In addition a contingency grant not exceeding Rs. 3, per
Scholarship annum for M.Tech and Rs.7,500 p.a. for Ph.D is also available.

Procedure application fee as advertised through a crossed bank draft drawn in favour of IIT or
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Completed applications alongwith registration

Candidates qualifying in GATE are also eligible for scholarship for PhD degree in
engineering and science. However admission and award of scholarship is governed
by the rules and regulations. of the admission giving university/ institution where the
candidate has to apply after getting GATE score.

UGC Research Fellowships in Engineering
Eligibility Fellowships are open to 1st or 2nd class Master's Degree holders (40 years age) in
Engineering/Technology and who have passed GATE/UGC - CSIR JRF examination
during the last three years and have shown aptitude for research work. Women
candidates are eligible upto 50 yrs.
Duration The research fellowship are tenable for a period of four years extendable by another
year.
Selection Selection is made on merit on the recommendations of a Committee appointed by the
Procedure UGC.
Value The value of Research Fellowship is Rs. 2,400-2,500 per month in addition to contingent
grant of Rs.7,500 for meeting expenditure for research work.

JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

University Grants Commission (UGC) and Council of Scientific & Industrial Research
(CSIR) hold a national level UGC-CSIR test for determining the eligibility of Indian
nationals for award of Junior Research Fellowship; in the subjects under the Faculties
of Humanities (including Languages) & Social Sciences and Science & Engineering
respectively. The eligible candidates have to find the placement in a university/national
laboratory/institution of higher learning and research/Centres of Advanced Study/
Departments of Special Assistance/Career Awards and Area Studies etc. (This scheme
is combined with UGC rest for Lecturers in Universities and Colleges).
Eligibility Upper Age 28 yrs (relaxable upto 5 yrs in case of SC/ST, physically handicapped and
women candidates). Qualifications: Master's degree with 55% marks in relevant subject/
field. Candidates who have appeared in the final year of qualifying examination and
whose result is awaited may apply for the Test.
Scheme The test consists of 3 papers to be held in two separate sessions. Paper I is of 'General'
of the nature intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude, of the candidate. It is primarily
Test designed to test reasoning ability and to assess the breadth of general awareness of the
candidate at the 12 - yr Hr Secondary level. Papers II and III cover one of the subjects
mentioned in the advertisement, these correspond to knowledge at the postgraduate
level in that subject. Each subject includes different branches of its specialisation.
Papers I and II are each of 1 1/2 hours duration and carry maximum of 100 marks
containing 50 objective type questions. Paper III consist of only descriptive type
questions from the syllabus on the subject selected by the candidate. The paper is of
2 hours duration and carry a maximum of 200 marks.
Medium Candidates have the option to answer either in Hindi or in English in case of Social
Sciences, and Humanities.
Value Rs 2,500 per month. Contingent grants Rs. 10,000/- per annum.

Application Format of application form is given with the notification. Completed applications
Procedure with requisite fee should reach the Registrar of the University, selected as test centre
(90 univ centres) in case of Humanities and subjects. Candidates
found eligible to take the test are issued call letters and the necessary information
regarding syllabus, sample questions etc are supplied to them. by the university.
In case of candidate applying for Science and Engineering subject, they are required
to submit applications with requisite fee direct to the Controller of Examination,
Examination Unit, CSIR Complex, Dr K S Krishnan Marg, Pusa, New Delhi 110012
by the prescribed date.
Candidate should clearly specify on the envelope and on the top of the application
form that the application is for Junior Research Fellowship Test.
