Notification and Instructions on the Senior Secondary Biology Syllabus : Dissection of Animals

NOTIFICATION


In pursuance of the judgement of the Hon'ble High Court of Delhi in CWP No. 139/96 dated 19.5.95, dissection  of animals  has  been  made optional to the students of Senior Secondary stage and the existing syllabus of biology for classes XI and XII is to be modified to include alternate activities/experiments.

2.The above direction of the Hon'ble High Court of Delhi are brought to the notice of all concerned for information and further necessary action

Sub: Dissection of animals in Class XII Biology Syllabus

Dear Principal,

In compliance with the directions of the Hon'ble High Court of Delhi dated 19th May, 1997, the Board has decided to make dissection of animals as optional to the students of Senior Secondary Classes.  In view of this, the practical syllabus in Biology of Classes XI and XII stands modified in so far as dissection of animals is concerned.

The students may undertake optional experiments/activities in lieu of dissection as per the alternatives given in the Annexure.

You are requested to bring this to the notice of all the students in classes XI & XII offering Biology as well as to the teachers, who are teaching the subject.

The above change is applicable with immediate effect inclusive of the students, who are appearing for March 1998 Examinations of the Board.

          In pursuance to the discussions held in the Chambers of Minister for Environment & Forests, Prof. Saifuddin Souz, on 26.3.1997 regarding dissection of animals at the senior secondary school level, it has now been decided that dissection may be made optional to students of senior secondary stage.   The existing syllabus will have to be suitably modified by NCERT and CBSE jointly to include alternative activities and experiments.  Steps may please be taken immediately to initiate action and the outcome be informed to us at an early date.

ANNEXURE

Activities /experiments suggested as optional experiments to dissection:

  1. Study of abnormal constituents of urine: albumin glucose, acetone(abnormal constituents may be added in normal sample for practical exercise).

  2. Dissection of a flower to separate out and display its various parts (Sepals, petals, stamens and carpels) Flowers suggested: Petunia, Hibiscus, Hollyhock, Pisum or any other large sized bisexual flower.

  3. Making of a temporary, mount of transverse/vertical section of ovary of a flower to show placentation. (Same flowers as listed in item No.2).

  4. Dissection of water soaked ungerminated seed to show different parts.Seeds suggested. Gram, Pea, Bean, Castor or any other large-sized dicot seed.

  5. Preparation of stained human blood film and identification of blood cells. (Precaution: The instructors to ensure that only disposable needless/ordinary needles heated over a flame are used).

  6. Study of haemolysis, and crenation of RBCs from human blood. (Precaution: The instructors to ensure that only disposable needles/or ordinary needles heated over a flame are used.)

  7. Study of external morphology of adult cockroach: Body regions, identification of sex giving reasons.

Section (A) on list of Biology Practical Exercises (based on the syllabus) of class XII Biology practical syllabus gets modified accordingly.  It may be noted that activity No.7 (to detect the presence of sugar in urine),  activity No.8 (to detect the presence of albumin in urine) in Section B and activity No.12 in Section C (study of parts of flowers) of List of Biology Practical exercises IN THE EXISTING SYLLABUS stand  deleted.  It may be brought to the notice of all concerned that ALL THE ABOVE MENTIONED EXERCISES NO.1 TO 7 ARE COMPULSORY FOR STUDENTS OPTING OUT OF ANIMAL DISSECTION AND ARE TO BE DONE DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR.  HOWEVER, ONLY TWO OF THESE ACTIVITIES WILL BE SET IN THE ANNUAL PRACTICAL EXAMINATION, and the student will be evaluated in both the experiments.  The marks so secured will be reduced to half by the examiner while preparing the final marks-list as per the guidelines in the Senior School Curriculum.
