Subject: Constitution
of a Standing Committee to go into the working of Women’s Studies on a
continuing basis.

Whereas the erosion of women’s
studies in the university system has caused widespread concern among the
academic community and women’s groups, it is therefore, necessary that an
immediate review is undertaken of the current status of the woken’s studies
in the country to assess the role they have played in consistence with the
objectives of the National Policy of Education (NPE) and to further define
their new role in the contemporary scenario with particular reference to the
impact of liberalization policy.
Now, therefore, in
exercise of the powers vested under Section 20(1) of the UGC Act, it has
been decided by the Government to constitute a Standing Committee to go into
the working of Women’s Studies on a continuing basis and, to submit period
reports to the UGC. This supersedes all any other exercises being
undertaken at present by the Commission in regard to Women’s Studies. The
composition of the Committee is as follows:

3. The Committee shall
be serviced by the UGC. The Secretary, UGC will provide necessary
assistance for this purpose in consultation with the Chairperson.
