Education for
International Understanding
UNESCO is running a
project named Associated Schools Project (ASP Net). Associated
Schools are educational institutions, which are directly linked
with the UNESCO secretariat for participation in the Schools
Project (ASP Net) for undertaking activities relating to
Education for International Understanding, Cooperation and
Peace. On the recommendation of Indian National Commission for
Cooperation with UNESCO (INCCU), 50 schools and Teacher Training
Institutions from India have been enlisted with UNESCO under
this project. There are 260 UNESCO Clubs registered with INCCU.
As per the new ASPnet mission statement “ ASPnet is a network of
committed schools engaged in fostering and delivering quality
education in pursuit of peace, liberty, justice and human
development in order to meet the pressing educational needs of
children and young people throughout the world.”
The ASPnet project was launched by UNESCO in 1953 to encourage
primary and secondary schools and teacher training institutions
to organize projects and special programmes designed to
strengthen education for international understanding,
cooperation and peace and also to increase knowledge of world
problems and role of specialized agencies of the UN in solving
them, to develop better understanding of other peoples and
cultures and to create understanding and awareness about human
rights and fundamental freedoms.
The Indian National Commission acts as a facilitator and co-ordinator
and acts as a central liaison body between the Government and
the UNESCO in propagating these ideas by helping extend its
outreach at grass root level. At present there are 50 schools
and teacher training institutions from India, which are
associated with ASPnet project. In addition there are 260 UNESCO
clubs, established mostly in schools which are associated with
INC The ASP net Schools have participated in various contests
organized by UNESCO.
